protest songs blog ~ im gonna do dear mr president by p!nk

Dear Mr. President,
Come take a walk with me.
Let's pretend we're just two people and
You're not better than me.
I'd like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly.

What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street?
Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep?
What do you feel when you look in the mirror?
Are you proud?

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye
And tell me why?

Dear Mr. President,
Were you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
How can you say
No child is left behind?
We're not dumb and we're not blind.
They're all sitting in your cells
While you pave the road to hell.

What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away?
And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay?
I can only imagine what the first lady has to say
You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine.

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye?

Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Minimum wage with a baby on the way
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Building a bed out of a cardboard box
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
You don't know nothing 'bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
Oh

How do you sleep at night?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Dear Mr. President,
You'd never take a walk with me.
Would you?
What social injustices/issues are discussed in the song ?
homelessness, war, deaths in Iraq, social inequality, prejudice, No child is left behind campaign, bush attempting to make abortion illegal, equal human rights, gay rights, Bush's hatred to the gay community, drug and alcohol abuse, drug and alcohol addiction, classism, poverty are all social issues, injustices that are discussed in this song.
Who is the artist?
P!nk and Billy Mann
How are they connected to a protest movement?
they voiced all the opinions the country had about its president at the time
What events were taking place in the year the song was written?
it was Martin Luther King day
Print the lyrics to the song. Explain the meaning of the song.
What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street-HUD estimates, the homeless population has quadrupled in size in the last twenty years, while the number of beds available in shelters has fallen by approximately 57,000 but this wasn't a focus in bush's reign so Pink may be referring here to those left homeless after Katrina. Bush was widely criticized for his slow reaction to the threat of the Hurricane and his delayed response to the destruction and victims
How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye-refers to the death of American soldiers in Iraq. According to icasualties.org, under President Bush's administration (and at press time), over 3500 soldiers had perished as a result of the fighting in
Iraq and Afghanistan. also if you look at this chart the USA spends the combined amount of the next 11 top military spending countries. does anyone else think that's a bit extreme?
Dear Mr. President,
Were you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
How can you say
No child is left behind?-refers to President Bush's widely debated "No Child Left Behind" program, in which federal funding for schools is contingent on standardized test scores

What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away?-refers to President Bush's adamant pro-life stance. In accordance with the teachings of Bush's Methodist faith, President Bush believes that life begins at conception. Therefore, he has a track record of opposing all proposals that interfere with life before birth. This also includes most stem-cell research proposals.
And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay?-Again, in accordance with standard Methodist teachings, Bush is opposed to homosexual unions. In particular, President Bush has pushed for the "Marriage Protection Amendment," a piece of legislature which would define marriage as the union between a man and a woman. Bush has met controversy during his term when it was revealed that Dick Cheney's daughter was openly gay and having a child with her partner
I can only imagine what the first lady has to say
You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine-refers to allegations that Bush had an affinity for alcohol in his youth. Pink refers to cocaine here because of Bush's supposed arrest and ensuing discovery of cocaine possession in 1972. Bush neither confirms nor denies these allegations, saying only "when I was young and irresponsible, I was young and irresponsible."

Refer specifically to at least 2 stanzas in the lyrics to support your interpretation of the song. How did this song have a positive or negative effect on society?
What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street and How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye  brought a positive aspect to the country because it made them look deeper to see if their president was a good choice for office

Do you think a song can make a difference?
depends on the song
Why do you like this song? (Meaning, personal associations, tune..)
I like how rebellious the song is because like she's yelling at the federal government I mean how bad ass is that and I also like how the song makes you emotional and makes you think and the tune keeps me engaged

If you were to write a protest song what would it be about? What genre of music would it be? Why?
if I were to write a protest song it would be about gay rights and the LGBTQ community because I don't think it gets talked enough about in our music world. I would probably write it in rock n roll genre because to me that's real music and I think it'd be totally awesome if I were in a rock n roll band I also think that most kids who are going through a tough time are listening to rock n roll because they're being out-casted and they can relate to their out-casted band musicians because right now hip hop and rap and pop have taken over the airwaves.

ASE 1 Ad campaign process

ok so basically I worked mostly solo on this project. to start we took portrait "mug shots" or just posed pictures so we could "cut them up". after that we fought with the iMovie program at school. when we realized it wouldn't work we decided to do it at home on my computer. because of scheduling difficulty I did the movie and Britt did the written process that we handed in. our design was what is the ase1 look? we decided that grabbing people at random was the best way to depict how our school dresses. although the trick to it is there is no look at ase 1. we decided that the song supermodel by clueless was a good song to play our pictures to. we took out the part where she talks about starving herself though. we showed bodies without heads and vice versa. then we put them together the way we were supposed to have them. I think it would have been more effective if we could have mixed and matched but this is what we had to work with based on time frames. although I think our movie conveyed what our goal was. to show ase is inclusive and you can be yourself without being bullied for it.

Brand names

ok so if i could have any brand id probably own a Dairy Queen food chain.
BUT somehow i doubt thats how this assignment works so if i could have any brand name i wanted i would probably have a chevrolet silverado
something positive that people might think about me is that maybe im a family person who works hard. some negative things people might think is that i dont care about the environment, im a rough person, my car is too big for the road, or im a hillbilly. they also might think that a girl shouldn't be driving a truck. i think i know that people would say these things because ive heard them when i hear people talking about trucks. the brand name i want is easily recognizable because its a car people tend to recognize cars easier than most products. the name is displayed on the car. i dont think the prominence of the brand name says much about the person it just shows the advertisement. i think teens like brand names so much because their whole world is a social game. brands take a status rols and when youre looped up into social games you often end up worrying about status and your role in the community. im not exactly sure how we could choose to improve peoples perception of ourselves but my assumption is showing your personality more than you show your labels

I AM METH

"I AM METH"
(This was written by a young Indian girl who was in jail for drug
charges, and was addicted to meth. She wrote this while in jail. As you will
so...
on read, she fully grasped the horrors of the drug, as she tells in this
simple, yet profound poem. She was released from jail, but, true to her
story, the drug owned her. They found her dead not long after, with the
needle still in her arm.)

Please keep praying for our Children, Teens, Young adults. Understand,
this thing is worse than any of us realize...

My Name: "Is Meth"

I destroy homes, I tear families apart, take your children, and that's just the start.

I'm more costly than diamonds, more precious than gold,
The sorrow I bring is a sight to behold.

If you need me, remember I'm easily found,
I live all around you - in schools and in town.

I live with the rich; I live with the poor,
I live down the street, and maybe next door.

I'm made in a lab, but not like you think,
I can be made under the kitchen sink.
In your child's closet, and even in the woods,
If this scares you to death, well it certainly should.

I have many names, but there's one you know best,
I'm sure you've heard of me, my name is crystal meth.

My power is awesome; try me you'll see,
But if you do, you may never break free.

Just try me once and I might let you go,
But try me twice, and I'll own your soul.

When I possess you, you'll steal and you'll lie,
You do what you have to -- just to get high.

The crimes you'll commit for my narcotic charms
Will be worth the pleasure you'll feel in your arms,
your lungs your nose.

You'll lie to your mother; you'll steal from your dad,
When you see their tears, you should feel sad.

But you'll forget your morals and how you were raised,
I'll be your conscience, I'll teach you my ways.

I take kids from parents, and parents from kids,
I turn people from God, and separate friends.

I'll take everything from you, your looks and your pride,
I'll be with you always -- right by your side.

You'll give up everything - your family, your home,
Your friends, your money, then you'll be alone.

I'll take and take, till you have nothing more to give,
When I'm finished with you, you'll be lucky to live.

If you try me be warned - this is no game,
If given the chance, I'll drive you insane.

I'll ravish your body, I'll control your mind,
I'll own you completely, your soul will be mine.

The nightmares I'll give you while lying in bed,
The voices you'll hear, from inside your head.

The sweats, the shakes, the visions you'll see,
I want you to know, these are all gifts from me.

But then it's too late, and you'll know in your heart,
That you are mine, and we shall not part.

You'll regret that you tried me, they always do,
But you came to me, not I to you.

You knew this would happen, many times you were told,
But you challenged my power, and chose to be bold.

You could have said no, and just walked away,
If you could live that day over, now what would you say?

I'll be your master, you will be my slave,
I'll even go with you, when you go to your grave.

Now that you have met me, what will you do?
Will you try me or not? It's all up to you.

I can bring you more misery than words can tell,
Come take my hand, let me lead you to hell.

i saw this and wondered if its so bad why do drug abusers make it look so fun?

holy slut!

OK so I tried to do an assignment on American apparel ads so naturally I googled it. I don't recommend it unless you are looking for images of men and women in next to nothing for clothing. My exact search was : 'american apparel ads' . I am almost positive American apparel is a clothing company and not an erotica store so why are all their ads looking at models who seem under dressed? If they want their audience to buy the clothes shouldn't they make their ads about clothing people would generally wear in public? Last time I checked no self respecting woman is going to walk around in public in a mesh suit such as this one

I don't see myself in their advertising and why would I? I'm a teenager looking for the next coolest hoodie and tank top or ripped up jeans or vintage overalls, not these clothes that would instantly label an already self-conscious person as a promiscuous hoe amongst her peers at school. Don't the clothing companies and models understand that teens are probably the most highly effected persons from this media image type. To the 'Big Man', get a grip and show some individuality and put some clothes on these people if you're a clothing store. After all isn't that what your supposed to be doing?

bell.. evolving.

The Bell System logo and trademark as it appeared in 1969

In my opinion this looks like a technology upgrade. You can tell its getting technological support now.

Bell further in the future

1915

January 25
In 1913, under AT&T ownership, the Bell System became a government sanctioned monopoly following a government anti-trust suit and the Kingsbury Commitment. After 1934, AT&T was regulated by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC). Proliferation of the telephone allowed the company to become the largest corporation in the world until its dismantling by the United States Department of Justice in 1984, at which time the Bell System ceased to exist.
Bell takes part in the formal opening of the transcontinental telephone line by talking on the telephone in New York to Watson in San Francisco. Invitation from Theodore Vail to Bell
AT&T started on the line in 1885 and completed construction of the line on June 27, 1914, erecting the last pole at Wendover, Utah. However, the line was not made operational until San Francisco’s exposition to mark the completion of the Panama Canal, on which day Bell made the call.

Obviously doing something interesting got him some hype in the papers. I was unable to find exerts from the papers around this time.

Bell's Box Telephone of 1877

The first commercial telephone used by Alexander Graham Bell was based on his patent of January 1877. The telephone consisted of a single transmitter/receiver placed within a retangular wooden box. somebody could speak into the opening in the box and then listen through the same opening. This telephone had essentially the same design as the patent drawing except for the shape. The the patent drawing had a round shape rather than squared.

Two or more of these box phones were connected in series on a line with a ground return. The first telephone line was installed in April 1877 between Charles William's electrical shop on Court Street, Boston and his home about three miles away. A month later the first rented installations were made making this line the first commercial phone service. A mark in history that would pave the way first for families to have a phone in every home, then individuals to have smaller portable phones, a phone answering machine for businesses and much more yet to come.

The box phone had nothing to warn you of incoming calls. June of 1877, Thomas Watson devised a "thumper" that would strike the diaphram of the box phone to make a tapping sound on the receiving telephone as a signal device.

the earliest advertisment i was able to come over in my research was this one ---->
Patent TextPatent Text Patent TextPatent Text

as you can see all it is is words in a boring black text and it is extremely long. i wonder how many people actually took the time to read this out of their day after all back in the 1800s weren't they still doing insane amount of chores and stuff to get by?

A Bell System logo (called the Blue Bell) used from 1889 to 1900. The Bell Telephone Company and its successors created the Bell System and drove its expansion.

Bell

As of today I am going to start following the media lifespan of Bell. In my opinion the man whom invented the phone made it that much easier for our stalkers to find us. Last time I checked no one would be able to find you through the mailing system. Nowadays many phones have tracking systems in them and our safety is closely walking on the line of safe and privacy invasion. So much so that the government has created technology that allows them to tap into our phone systems and listen to our everyday world around us. Let's take a jump into the Bell advertisments :)

no wonder our perception of beauty is so distorted

what have we come to? socially? emotionally? morally?

maybe we murder ourselves inside to have this odd image of beauty on the outside. whoever said looks cant kill they were wrong in a sense because emotionally this is not our look. we cant all be the same. we cant all be model type. our inner selves are being squashed and tormented by the media saying whats on the inside isn't good enough. its good that dove has the self esteem workshop and im a huge supporter to there campaigne but isnt it odd that yes they think everyones beautiful on the inside and out in their own way; but that they sell the very beauty products the media tells us we need to be beautiful?

what is mass murder?

what is mass murder? well wikipedia knows it!!

Mass murder (in military contexts, sometimes interchangeable with "mass destruction" or "genocide") is the act of murdering a large number of people, typically at the same time or over a relatively short period of time.[1] According to the FBI, mass murder is defined as four or more murders occurring during a particular event with no cooling-off period between the murders. A mass murder typically occurs in a single location in which a number of victims are killed by an individual or more.[2][3] With exceptions, many acts of mass murder end with the death of the perpetrator(s), whether by direct suicide or being killed by law enforcement.
